You can never be ready to say goodbye to the love of your life, but Jocelyn had no other choice. The doctors had stopped her husband Jasper’s treatment and they both knew it would only be a couple moments before he would close his eyes forever. But with his final words, he would whisper something to Jocelyn. And his words would turn her life completely upside down… As her now late husband was rolled out of the hospital room, Jocelyn could only think about what he had just said to her. When she leaned in she just expected to hear something like I love you. But not this. How could these have been his final message to her? But between all the doubt, Jocelyn also had a moment of clarity. A moment in which she realized that she needed to act on what Jasper had told her. She needed to find answers otherwise his words would haunt her thoughts for the rest of time… And it would not be long before this search would lead Jocelyn to discover something about her Husband Jasper that she never knew maybe never wanted to know… But what did Jasper whisper to Jocelyn on his deathbed? What did her search lead Jocelyn to and what did she discover about her husband? Jasper and Jocelyn had been married for decades. They had a beautiful family together and she was hoping that they could live to old age together, but for Jasper that wasn’t in the cards. They went through everything together, but now all of that was changing and there was something more. Jasper had been in the hospital on and off for months and he was in the hospital again, this time for a whole month. Jocelyn didn’t want to admit it, but she knew deep down that Jasper didn’t have much time left. But she was left with a question. Should she tell him her thoughts or let him be in denial too? As it was, Jocelyn never had to tell him. Jasper’s doctor met with him to inform him about his condition. Despite being on several treatment plans it seemed that none of them were working. He’d been on medications, physical therapy, experimental treatments and lots of other programs, but what could he do next? Jasper’s doctor had a serious talk with him about his condition. The treatments weren’t working and they were out of options now. Jasper would have to start saying goodbye. Jasper seemed oddly calm when hearing this. Most patients are visibly upset, but Jasper seemed fine. What was going on? The doctor left Jasper and called in Jocelyn later that afternoon. She was already planning on seeing Jasper like she did every day, but when she got the call, she knew something was wrong. She was struck with grief when she heard what they had to say, but maybe it wouldn’t be all bad. What the doctor had told Jocelyn was that they needed her permission to stop the current treatment plans. He explained that nothing was working or doing any good for Jasper. As his primary caregiver, they needed her permission to stop everything. But she wasn’t sure she could agree. Jocelyn knew that the dreaded message would come someday, but she still couldn’t believe it when she heard it. Jasper and she had been through everything for over 40 years and she wasn’t sure she could go on with him. How was she supposed to stop his treatments? Wouldn’t that make her the cause of his death? Jocelyn thought about it and realized that stopping the treatment is what Jasper wanted. They wouldn’t have asked for her permission without talking with him. So if this is what he wanted she knew she had to agree. She told the doctor on the phone that they had her permission to stop the treatments. Now she had to face the end. Jocelyn made it to the hospital as quickly as she could. They were already making him as comfortable as possible when she got there. Jocelyn sat down as soon as she could, took Jasper’s hand, and decided that no matter how hard it was she was not going to leave his side for a second. Jasper was still awake and the couple talked about their life together as much as they could. When Jasper wasn’t able to keep up anymore she recounted her favorite memories for him. She soon noticed that Jasper was falling asleep. Taking her last opportunity, she told him what she had to say. Jocelyn told her husband that she would be okay after he left. That she would find a way to live on and that she would take care of their family. She told him that he didn’t have to worry about her and that it was okay to let go. But he had something to say too. She expected his last words to be something like ‘goodbye’ or ‘I love you’. That it would be some form of a declaration of love. But they weren’t what she was expecting. Instead, Jasper’s final words would turn Jocelyn’s world upside down and change everything about her life. “Go to where out love began. There you will find the truth.” She looked him in the eyes as he said it, the words ringing in her ears as she knew this was goodbye. But as she looked into his eyes she saw something that was completely out of the ordinary for Jasper. What was it? It was as if Jasper was apologetic. Why would he be? It was okay for him to go. It was his time and he had absolutely nothing to apologize for. Jocelyn was sure of that. She tried to process what he just said and she asked him to explain, but all he could do was smile and close his eyes. It was just seconds after that the alarm on the heart rate monitor went on as the line went flat. The doctor and nurses came in to confirm his death and turned off the loud noise. Jocelyn was dazed. One minute he was there. The next he was gone. And now she was supposed to figure out life without him. But how? But there were those last words to think about. They politely led Jocelyn out of the room and into a private grieving room. It was there that she started to think about what he’d said. She was so focused on his words that she was barely crying. She had to find out what he’d meant. “Go to where our love began. There you will find the truth.” What could he have meant? What could she find? And where did their love begin? She could think of many places that they spent time together in their early days, but one didn’t stick out. At least not at first. Jocelyn wasn’t in a clear state of mind for some time, but it finally hit her where he meant for her to go. Their love had begun when they had been sailing for a weekend on an old, tiny boat. It was there that they had said their first I love yous. It was so obvious now, but there was one problem. Jocelyn couldn’t remember how to get to the lake. Much more, she didn’t know where the boat was or if it even still existed. The last time she’d seen it was over 30 years ago. Did Jasper still own it? She knew they had tried to fix it once, but it was too expensive. Jocelyn thought that he’d left it to rot, but now she wasn’t so sure. Jocelyn decided to look over some old photos to see if she could find out where the lake was and hopefully the boat too. In one of the photos she saw the name of the harbor near the edge of the city and it brought the memories back. She and Jasper had docked there the last time they’d gone sailing. She had to go there. Jocelyn decided to leave for the harbor right then. It was her best chance at finding out what Jasper had meant. As it turned out, this would be a good decision. The harbor docks were full of boats. It was close to winter and they were all getting packed away. Luckily there was someone there to help her. Jocelyn nervously asked the staff if they knew of her husband and what his request might mean. She knew it sounded strange and in the end she told them that she was looking for a boat that she’d last seen 30 years ago because of a riddle. The staff were confused but one of them had an idea. The staff member checked the records and then made some calls. She soon reported to Jocelyn that she should go home. The boat hadn’t been here for a few months and they didn’t know where it had ended up. Jocelyn was a bit defeated but thanked them. Now she needed a new clue. Jocelyn was very sad on the way home but tried to keep a clear head. She figured that Jasper meant that she should look for the boat, but where could it be now? Jocelyn simply didn’t know. With a defeated heart she pulled up to her driveway and then couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Is she dreaming or is this real? Was that the boat where their love started years ago? Jocelyn blinked her eyes once more, but really there was the boat, in the middle of the driveway of their house. How the hell is this thing at her driveway? But the first question that came to mind was; who put that boat here in the meantime? It would be a while before she would find out. Jocelyn parked her car on the side of the street and walked toward the boat. She soon saw that the door to the cabin was open. Jocelyn climbed up the boat steps, she immediately had a flashback to the wonderful things she and Jasper had experienced on this boat. At first glance, very little seemed to have changed about the boat. But then she steps through the hatch of the boat, into the cabin. She smells a strange odor, but a nice one. Then she sees where the smell is coming from. All of the floor and seating area of the cabin are strewn with red roses. So who put them here? She quickly walks over to the table where most of the roses are. She sees that there is something under the roses. When she has removed all the flowers, she sees what is on the table. It is a letter with her name on it. Because of all the dirt on the letter, she has trouble reading what it says. She dusts off the letter and begins to read. She gets tears in her eyes when she reads the first sentence, ‘Dear Jocelyn, when you read this letter I will probably be gone.’ ‘But I want to let you know through this way that I love you super much and that I had an unforgettable time with you. Everything comes to an end. I want to give you this boat so that you will never forget me. However, there is still something I want to leave you.. ‘You can find it in the harbor where we had some beautiful memories with this boat, especially the ONE time…If you don’t understand what I mean, just ask the harbor master. Love, your husband Jasper’. Jocelyn is flabbergasted. On the one hand, she is delighted with the beautiful letter and gift from her late husband. But on the other hand, she has no idea what Jasper meant by the last paragraph. The only thing she can do now is to go back to the harbor. She climbs out of the boat again and jumps into her car. On the way to the harbor, several thoughts go through her head. What is the “thing” that Jasper has been keeping from her? Because her head is not in the right place, she almost causes an accident. She can just brake in time. The man in the other car honks and gives her the finger. She doesn’t care; all she wants is to get to the harbor as quickly as possible. Once there, she doesn’t know where to start looking. She walks first to the place where their boat used to be. Maybe Jasper left something here…There was no boat left at the mooring. After more than fifteen minutes of searching the quay and jetty, she gives up. She doesn’t feel like searching any further so she walks to the harbor master’s office. After knocking twice, the man opens up. ‘Hello Jocelyn, I was expecting you,’ he says. Smiling, he lets her in. It’s an old stinky office. ‘You must have come for Jasper’s present. I want to be the first to offer my condolences on the loss of your husband. But I think I have something that can improve your mood considerably. He takes Jocelyn to a small room in the back of the office. When they enter there is one thing that stands out; a giant safe. The harbor master takes a bill out of his wallet, reads it quickly and then opens the safe. Look, this is for you says the man…. He hands her a large, old-looking chest. The chest is unlocked, and slowly Jocelyn opens the lid. To her own surprise, the crate is full of documents. She grabs the first document she sees lying there…. Then she is startled… On the document is written in large letters; TOP SECRET. Then next to those letters she sees her husband’s name and an old passport photo. After she reads the rest of the document, a light begins to come on. All this time Jasper has been leading a double life. He was hired 29 years ago to work as a spy for the FBI. In the chest are several passports from all kinds of countries. All with a picture of Jasper in them. He appears to have had multiple aliases over the years. In the chest, Jasper has also left a letter for Jocelyn. In it, he explains his double life in full and says that he had wanted so much to tell her what he really did for a living. But because it was strictly secret, he simply could not do so. Then there is something else important at the bottom of the letter. He closes the letter by saying that he has made a lot of money in the almost 30 years that he has been a double agent. A small part of it he has put in the boat, but most of it is still in bank accounts all over the world. All the money he has on it is now for Jocelyn. She can do whatever she wants with it. In the end, it turns out to be over a million dollars. Jasper has never had the time in his life to spend all this money. Jocelyn is speechless. Out of joy she embraces the harbor master. No need to thank me he says laughing. He walks her back to her car and waves her off. Jocelyn drives back home in a daze, calling her children on the way. Her children are just as speechless as her. Crying with happiness, she explains the whole story well. She decides to divide half of the money between her children. By the way, they won’t get that money until they are over 21. Otherwise, they’re going to do weird things with it.. With part of the money, she buys a nice place in the harbor and puts her and Jasper’s boat in it. Together with her children, she will make many beautiful trips. Not only by boat but also by plane. After all, they have so much money that much more is possible.
